Dirk Bender was found guilty by Court of Galapagos
Environmental Authority asks maximum penalty for attempting to remove four of the islands land iguanas without authorization.
This afternoon, members of the First Court of Criminal Galapagos, German citizen found guilty Dirk Bender, during the adjudication hearing. Bender was accused by the Galapagos National Park Service (GNPS) for disturbing the local ecosystem of the archipelago unauthorized attempt to extract four land iguanas in July last year.
During the adjudication hearing was installed yesterday at 09:00, magistrates heard the eyewitness, including rangers, experts, police officers, an employee of Ecogal, the director of the Galapagos National Park and the accused.
In his intervention recognized German citizen was arrested in Fiji (2011) for attempting to trafficking of these islands with iguanas. After nearly 12 hours of hearing this was suspended at 21:00, but was reinstated this morning at 09:30 to hear the arguments of both parties. At 13:00 the judges retired to deliberate and informed that they would dictate a sentence at 17:00.
Edwin Naula, Director of GNP, said that "the court's decision is a milestone in the defense of the rights of nature and the conservation of the fragile the Galapagos ecosystem."
The environmental authority requested a maximum penalty for the offender, equivalent to four years prison and compensation for all damage caused by the German citizen.
Dirk Bender was found guilty for the crime of extraction of species, environmental crime contained in Article 437F of the Criminal Code. Outside the court, media and remained vigilant Galapagos community's opinion of the judges.
Dirk Bender was escorted by members of the Intervention and Rescue Group at the adjudication hearing.
